NBA – The Minnesota Timberwolves outlasted the San Antonio Spurs, 104–102, in a tightly contested Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals on Tuesday (Philippine Time), leaning on a late push to steal the opening win.
The Spurs and Timberwolves were locked in a dead heat at halftime, 45-all, after neither side managed to build separation in a physical first half. Minnesota held a narrow 24–23 edge after the opening quarter before San Antonio responded to even the score by the break.
San Antonio briefly seized control in the third quarter behind strong interior defense from Victor Wembanyama, who finished with 11 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists, and an imposing 12 blocks. The Spurs entered the fourth quarter ahead, 72–69.
However, Minnesota gradually chipped away in the final frame, outscoring San Antonio in the closing stretch. Anthony Edwards made his return and contributed 18 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and multiple three-pointers, helping stabilize the Timberwolves’ offense late.
Julius Randle provided a key two-way performance with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists, including two three-pointers, as Minnesota executed crucial possessions down the stretch.
The Spurs had a chance to force overtime, but Minnesota’s late defensive stands preserved the narrow two-point victory.
With the win, the Timberwolves take a 1–0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
