Comprehensive security measures have been deployed around the Senate complex as the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte begins Monday, with police restricting protest areas and tightening access controls.
According to a report by RH Jecelle Ricafort, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said demonstrators will not be allowed to gather in front of the Senate along the northbound lane of Diokno Boulevard in Pasay City.
NCRPO spokesperson Major Hazel Asilo told DZRH News that police will set up barricades in the area.
Protesters may only assemble along the southbound lane of Diokno Boulevard, which authorities said will also be closed to vehicle traffic later in the day.
As of Sunday, only one group had applied for a rally permit with the Pasay City government, according to the NCRPO. But in an update at 8 a.m. Monday, Asilo said no group had secured a permit to stage a protest outside the Senate.
Police said demonstrators would not be dispersed as long as they remain peaceful and do not cause disturbances.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it has not monitored any serious security threats but remains on heightened alert as proceedings begin.
Security has been tightened for both motorists passing through the area and individuals entering the Senate. Authorities have posted guidelines for those seeking entry, requiring them to:
-
Roll down vehicle windows
-
Identify themselves
-
Present identification cards
-
State their purpose
-
Show the required QR code
-
Submit to security inspection
-
Wait for authorization from security personnel
Police said the measures are intended to ensure order and safety throughout the duration of the impeachment trial.
