Navotas Lone District Rep. Tobias “Toby” Tiangco said on Thursday that it is clear resigned Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Elizaldy Co does not have plans to return to the Philippines and face the accusations of corruption made against him, and is instead using alleged threats to his life as an excuse.

In a report by RH 12 Milky Rigonan, Tiangco said that Co’s camp should present proof that their client cannot return home due to security reasons.

He asserted that they must show a threat assessment or seek assistance from the Philippine National Police (PNP) or National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to address death threats.

Although it is the government’s responsibility to ensure Co’s security, the lawmaker cannot use this as justification for avoiding accountability, Tiangco said. He also pointed out that when one is in a position of power and wealth, such excuses are used to evade responsibility, whereas ordinary citizens must face cases filed against them.

In a press conference, Co’s lawyer, Atty. Ruy Rondain explained that even if Co wishes to come home, there is a “credible and serious threat” to his life.

“Ako personally, ang bigger fear ko is vigilante violence because everyone hates him,” Rondain told the media.

“Again, he will (return to the country) as soon as his threat to life is evaded … Look around you, ang dami, it’s all over social media. I'm not tech savvy, [and yet,] nakikita ko every day ‘yung mga threat sa kanya: ‘Isabit na ‘yan, bitayin na ‘yan,’ etc.,” he added.
