A thick ashfall hit the town of Camalig, Albay, on February 18, forcing local authorities and schools to suspend classes and work for the day.
The ashfall reduced visibility in several barangays and posed health risks, including respiratory and eye irritation. Residents were advised to stay indoors or wear masks and protective eyewear when venturing outside.
The ashfall was linked to ongoing activity at Mayon Volcano, which remains at Alert Level 3. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), lava-fed collapses at the summit continue to produce pyroclastic density currents and ash plumes affecting nearby towns. Similar activity on February 9 also resulted in heavy ash deposits across Albay communities.
In line with MDRRM-CCAMC Advisory No. 6, all face-to-face classes in both private and public schools affected by the ashfall in Camalig, Albay, are suspended on Wednesday. School principals were advised to coordinate with their respective Public Schools District Supervisors (PSDS) regarding the suspension. Local officials continue to monitor the situation to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Phivolcs and local disaster response units continue to monitor Mayon Volcano closely. Evacuation plans, hazard alerts, and ashfall assessments remain in effect until conditions stabilize. Classes and work are expected to resume once the ashfall threat diminishes.
