Somebody took the "Have a Break" slogan a bit too literally.
Swiss food giant Nestlé confirmed Saturday that thieves pulled off a massive heist, vanishing with a truck carrying 12 tons of KitKat bars. The shipment, consisting of 413,793 bars from the brand’s new range, departed central Italy for Poland but went completely off the grid before reaching its destination.
The vehicle and its nearly half-million chocolate bars remain unaccounted for. Nestlé has stayed tight-lipped about exactly where the truck pulled its disappearing act.
However, the burglars might find their loot hard to swallow. KitKat revealed that the missing bars are traceable via unique batch codes. In a clever "smart-chocolate" twist, anyone who scans the stolen bars will be greeted with instructions on how to contact the company.
"We are working closely with local authorities and supply chain partners to investigate," KitKat said in an online statement. "The good news: there are no concerns for consumer safety, and supply is not affected."
While the thieves currently have enough chocolate to feed a small city, the company assures fans that the rest of the world’s "breaks" remain right on schedule.
