Fresh off a historic ensemble win for the medical drama "The Pitt," Filipino American actress Isa Briones has returned to the Broadway stage, drawing comparisons to theater royalty during her debut performances in the new musical "Just in Time."
Briones stars as pop icon Connie Francis, performing opposite Matthew Morrison, who takes on the role of Bobby Darin.
The production, which chronicles the life and career of the legendary crooner, features a standout sequence where Briones joins Tristen Buettel, appearing as Sandra Dee, for a high-energy encore of the classic hit "Mack the Knife."
The actress’s arrival on stage has sparked intense reactions from theatergoers, many of whom recognize her from her television work.
Industry observer Don Talaga noted in a social media post that the audience erupted the moment the spotlight hit her, offering the kind of "thunderous claps and loud cheers typically reserved for Broadway divas like Lea Salonga."
Talaga attributed much of the fervor to fans recognizing her as Dr. Trinity Santos, her character from the HBO Max hit "The Pitt."
The stage return follows a successful awards season for Briones. At the 32nd Actor Awards, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards, she and the cast of "The Pitt" took home the trophy for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
The win highlighted a strong year for Filipino representation in the series, which also stars Amielynn Abellera as Perlah Alawi and Kristin Villanueva as Princess Dela Cruz.
Performing on Broadway is a homecoming for Briones, whose career is deeply rooted in the theater. She previously made her Broadway debut playing Eurydice in the Tony-winning musical "Hadestown." That run was a family affair, as she performed alongside her father, veteran actor and singer Jon Jon Briones, who portrayed Hermes.
Briones’s transition between the prestige of "The Pitt" and the technical demands of a Broadway musical solidifies her standing as a versatile force in the industry. "Just in Time" continues its run at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
