Tensions escalated between police and protesters in Matandang Balara, Quezon City, ahead of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 27.

The confrontation erupted after authorities arrested three protesters allegedly involved in vandalism, according to a report by RH Jecelle Ricafort.

Demonstrators attempted to block the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) vehicle carrying the arrested individuals, but failed to stop it from leaving the area.

A commotion followed as hundreds of police officers and protesters engaged in a pushing and shoving incident while a police barricade was set up to contain the crowd.

Authorities have yet to release further details regarding the arrests and the alleged vandalism.
