A teacher from Balabagan Trade School in Lanao del Sur was shot dead by a student on the morning of August 4, 2025, while on his way to the classroom.
According to a report by RH 19 Jun Dimacutac in Magandang Umaga Pilipinas, the suspect—identified as alias “Kaizer,” 20 years old, a Grade 11 male student—shot teacher Danilo Barba after allegedly receiving a failing grade. He used a .45 caliber pistol in the attack.
After committing the crime, the suspect fled the scene and hid in Marugogang, Lanao del Sur. He was later arrested after his sibling, a police officer, surrendered him to the authorities.
The investigation revealed that Barba was not the only teacher who gave the suspect a failing grade; other teachers had also done so. This prompted security personnel from the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Army to be stationed inside and outside the school premises.
The Bangsamoro Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education condemned the killing and called for justice, stating that teachers are a vital pillar of the community.
“This act of violence against an educator — someone who devoted his life to shaping the minds and futures of our youth — is both painful and unacceptable. Teachers are pillars of our communities, and their safety must be safeguarded at all times. Any harm against them is a threat to the values of education, peace, and public service,” the Bangsamoro Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education stated.
