Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS) Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela has defended the country’s efforts to expose China’s alleged violations of Philippine rights, asserting that publicizing these actions is not an escalation of tensions but a stand for national dignity and sovereignty.
In a social media post, Tarriela pushed back against online trolls who allegedly urged Philippine officials to stop exposing China’s actions, arguing that the Philippines could do little against the much larger power.
“Sa unang dinig, parang convincing. Pero kung pag-iisipan natin, ang ibig sabihin lang nito ay manahimik na tayo at hayaang yurakan ang dangal ng ating bansa,” Tarriela said.
He stressed that informing the international community about China’s alleged violations should not be mistaken for provoking conflict.
“Telling the world about China's violations is not escalating tension. It is standing up for our rights,” Tarriela said.
His remarks come amid continuing tensions in the WPS, where the Philippines has repeatedly raised concerns over China’s activities and asserted its maritime rights.
