The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested a Taiwanese national who allegedly posed as an agent of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and targeted foreign nationals in the Philippines with pending cases or legal concerns in the United States.

The suspect was arrested in Multinational Village, Parañaque City, according to NBI Director Atty. Melvin Matibag.

Authorities said the suspect allegedly used a fake FBI identity, including a badge and documents designed to make his claims appear legitimate. He reportedly told his targets that he had connections with the U.S. Department of Justice and could help settle or resolve their cases in the United States.

“Napapakilalang FBI, may badge, may gamit na parang document to represent the FBI. May mga handlers siyang kasama,” Matibag said.

According to the NBI chief, the suspect allegedly targeted individuals living abroad who had existing cases or legal issues involving U.S. authorities, particularly matters supposedly connected to the FBI or the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

The suspect allegedly acted as the leader of the group, with a Malaysian national serving as an intermediary and three Filipinos reportedly working as his associates.

Matibag said the NBI is coordinating with its counterparts in the United States and the U.S. Embassy to facilitate the turnover of foreign nationals who were allegedly victimized by the group.

“We are coordinating also with our counterparts in the USFAC para i-turnover din namin yung mga nabiktima,” Matibag said.

The NBI has also launched a follow-up operation to identify and arrest other individuals who may be involved in the alleged scheme.

The Taiwanese suspect is facing charges for computer-related fraud and usurpation of authority, according to the NBI.

Matibag warned that the bureau would continue to crack down on foreign nationals who allegedly use the Philippines as a base for criminal activities.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full extent of the alleged operation and identify other possible victims and accomplices.
