Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez said trucks weighing up to 30 metric tons may be allowed to cross the San Juanico Bridge before Christmas, following a recent inspection of the bridge by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
In a media briefing, Romualdez said Malacañang has entrusted the city government to study the possible increase in the current 15-metric-ton load limit, which was raised from the previous 3-metric-ton restriction. He noted that heavier vehicles may be permitted to cross at night on a one-way basis.
“Most likely gabi (makakadaan) pag madalang na yung mga vehicles… maybe 10 p.m. So depende... It also depends if it’s weekend or it’s a weekday. It will be posted naman properly,” Romualdez said, adding that the city is looking for ways to allow large vehicles to cross safely.
He said the move would be a major relief for cargo trucks, as it would reduce delays and lessen reliance on RoRo cargo vessels.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) earlier said it is targeting the restoration of the 33-metric-ton load limit on the bridge next year.
