Private tricycles, motorcars for hire (MCH), e-bikes, and pedicabs will now be allowed to use the National Highway in Tacloban City, Mayor Alfred Romualdez announced in a press interview on Friday, March 20.
The city will adopt a lenient approach and will not immediately apprehend violators, citing the current rise in fuel prices due to tensions in the Middle East.
"Pinapayagan na natin yung mga pedicab [at iba pa], kailangan may mga reflector, wag naman sila gitna ng kalye, mag-ingat sila," the Mayor said during a press interview.
Drivers of these vehicles are still required to yield and stay to the side when traveling on the highway. Any violations of traffic laws or disregard for traffic signals will continue to be penalized.
Romualdez emphasized their strict policy that minors are not allowed to drive the aforementioned vehicles along the national highways.
Previously, the National Highway in Tacloban strictly prohibited tricycles, e-bikes, pedicabs, and MCH vehicles. The city’s new measure is a temporary adjustment aimed at easing transport challenges amid the fuel price surge.
