The camp of resigned Ateneo men’s basketball coach Tab Baldwin assured authorities of its full cooperation in the ongoing investigation into the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
In a report by DZRH's Jecelle Ricafort, Baldwin appeared before the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)-Homicide Division on Monday, accompanied by a team of five lawyers, including Atty. Daniel Darvin and Atty. Karl David, in compliance with a subpoena issued by investigators.
Speaking on behalf of the former coach, Darvin said Baldwin’s appearance was intended to demonstrate his willingness to cooperate and help shed light on the June 8 tragedy in Dipaculao, Aurora, where the two players lost their lives during a team-related activity.
“We'll be pleased to sympathize with the families of Rene and Divine. We come before this office in the spirit of full cooperation and full compliance with the subpoena,” Darvin said.
The lawyer added that Baldwin and his legal team are committed to assisting authorities as the investigation progresses.
“And in order to shed light on the incidents of June 8, 2026. So the investigation is ongoing. We've given our full cooperation. And let us allow the investigation to take its course,” he added.
Darvin also expressed sympathy for the families of the deceased student-athletes, emphasizing that the camp recognizes the pain and loss suffered by their loved ones.
Despite his appearance before investigators, Baldwin declined to answer questions from members of the media. He remained silent when asked whether he would assume responsibility for the incident and whether the case involved possible homicide or hazing violations.
The NBI continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Baterbonia and Adili. Authorities have yet to determine whether criminal liability may arise from the incident as they gather statements and evidence from individuals connected to the case.
Baldwin’s appearance before the bureau follows earlier reports that he had postponed previous scheduled appearances before finally attending the proceedings as part of the ongoing investigation.
