Taal Volcano recorded a minor phreatomagmatic eruption early Thursday, Oct. 22, generating a plume that rose 1,200 meters above its main crater, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The eruption occurred at 4:52 a.m. and was captured by PHIVOLCS' thermal and IP cameras in Daang Kastila and Lower Calauit.

Despite the activity, PHIVOLCS maintained Alert Level 1 over Taal Volcano, indicating low-level unrest.

In its 24-hour monitoring bulletin as of 5 a.m. Thursday, PHIVOLCS reported two minor phreatomagmatic eruption events lasting two to three minutes each.

The agency also recorded two volcanic tremors and a sulfur dioxide emission flux of 575 metric tons per day on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

PHIVOLCS further observed strong steaming activity, with plumes reaching 3,000 meters above the volcano and drifting toward the southeast and east-northeast.

Short-term inflation of Taal Volcano Island was also detected, according to the agency.

A phreatomagmatic eruption occurs when magma interacts with water, producing steam-driven explosions that can eject volcanic materials and generate plumes.

PHIVOLCS continues to monitor the volcano as it remains under Alert Level 1.
