17-year-old Stefi Marithe Aludo secured her place in the annals of Philippine sports history on Saturday, becoming the winner of the first-ever all-Filipino matchup in a WTA-sanctioned event.
In a dominant display of skill and nerves, Aludo defeated fellow wildcard Angeline Alcala, 6-1, 6-0, in the opening qualifying round of the WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open.
The match, held at the newly-renovated Rizal Memorial Tennis Center, officially kicked off the country’s first professional women's tournament of this caliber on Saturday, January 24.
