The leadership of the Senate remains unchanged, with the minority bloc holding steady at 11 members, with no additional senators joining its ranks, Sen. Risa Hontiveros said Monday.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the 3 p.m. session, Hontiveros said there are no immediate expectations of a leadership change similar to the shift that occurred two weeks ago.
“Status quo pa rin. Para magkaroon ng leadership change, tulad nung nangyari two weeks ago, kailangan ng majority members of the Senate,” the senator said.
“Solid pa rin kaming labing isa sa minority,” she added.
Hontiveros said ongoing discussions with other senators continue, but no commitments have been made to expand their bloc and potentially reconstitute a majority.
“Sa ngayon, wala pa naidaragdag kaya kami sa minority ay nakatutok talaga dun sa well, panunumbalik ng pagtingin ng ating mga kababayan sa atin, sa Senado," she stated.
She added that the chamber is also preparing for key responsibilities in the coming months, including deliberations on the national budget and the procedures of a looming impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte, noting that senators have already taken their oath as judges.
Asked about challenges in persuading other senators to join their bloc, Hontiveros said any future majority should be formed based on shared principles.
“Siguro ang best na pagbubuo ng bagong majority if ever ay on the basis ng common values, common interests na magaan ang loob ng pagpasok ng lahat dun sa isang majority, isang bagong majority kung sakali," Hontiveros highlighted.
“Sa ngayon, basta ang given ay solid kaming labing-isa sa minority," she added.
Despite the lack of movement in numbers, she said talks remain ongoing as political alignments within the chamber continue to evolve.
