Senate President Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian will serve as the presiding officer at the impeachment trial on Monday, July 6.
Gatchalian confirmed this amid ongoing preparations for the high-profile case. He said he is ready to take on the role and continues to further prepare for it, reported RH 28 Raymund Dadpaas.
At present, he is studying the technical aspect of overseeing the impeachment proceedings, including the impeachment rules. He said it was crucial to examine the merits of the case, which will serve as the basis for the senator-judges’ collective decision.
However, he is not dismissing the possibility that his fellow senators would choose someone else to preside over the trial against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Gatchalian said he will not need an assisting lawyer beside him during the trial, having prepared to preside over it by Monday.
The first of the Articles of Impeachment to be tackled on Monday is the alleged grave threats Vice President Duterte issued against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
In an expletive-laden video, she swore an assassin would come for Marcos, his wife, and his cousin should she be killed. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) confirmed that the video is authentic and not fabricated with artificial intelligence (AI).
