Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano said in a press conference on Monday, May 18, that the Senate remains prepared to convene as an impeachment court, amid the ongoing tensions following the shooting incident inside the compound last week.

Cayetano noted that preparations are underway for the Senate to formally sit as an impeachment court, but stressed that the final step depends on unfolding political and procedural developments.

“[If] Everything goes the way we thought it would go, then we will be convening as an impeachment court, and I will take my oath. If it doesn't, then you're a witness to history,” he said.

In his remarks, Cayetano also framed the current situation as a moment of pressure on democratic institutions, saying he believes there are “forces ganging up” on the Senate.

Despite this, he underscored that the chamber must remain independent while fulfilling its constitutional role in impeachment proceedings.

Reflecting on leadership uncertainty, he acknowledged the volatility of his position, noting that the Senate President serves at the pleasure of the majority.

He also linked the moment to broader themes of faith, truth, and governance, urging discernment amid competing claims and political narratives.

Cayetano reiterated that the Senate will proceed based on constitutional mandate, adding that any convening of the impeachment court will be done in accordance with proper procedure and institutional integrity.
