Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano on Monday, May 18, publicly reflected on what he described as a potentially brief and uncertain leadership term, saying he could become the “shortest-serving Senate President,” possibly lasting only “7 to 8 days,” amid ongoing political tensions and speculations on a leadership shakeup.
Speaking during the Luzon Evangelical Leaders’ Fellowship: Prayer & Senate Direction, Cayetano linked his remarks to faith, governance, and institutional independence, framing his leadership as a “mission” rather than a fixed tenure.
“I do not know if this is the beginning of my journey as Senate President or if this is a despedida… I do not know if I can beat the shortest-serving Senate President of 13 days or only 7 or 8 days," he said.
Cayetano stressed that the Senate presidency is dependent on majority support, contrasting it with elected executive posts.
“The Senate President serves at the pleasure of the majority of the Senate,” he noted.
He also underscored what he called the deeper meaning of leadership duration, saying, "What matters is not when you're born or when you die. What matters is what you do in between.”
During the prayer gathering, Cayetano also referenced alleged “forces ganging up” on the Senate and ongoing scrutiny of recent security-related incidents inside the chamber, including claims of external influence and investigations involving law enforcement agencies.
He confirmed coordination with authorities on inquiries into reported incidents while emphasizing cooperation: “We have to show good faith… we cannot just believe in ourselves.”
Cayetano framed the Senate’s current situation as part of a broader struggle over institutional independence, warning against efforts that could weaken legislative autonomy and calling for prayer for truth and discernment.
“Do not pray for me as Senate president… pray that whatever plans the Lord has, there will be no spiritual or physical blockages,” he said, adding that leadership outcomes remain uncertain as the chamber navigates political and constitutional challenges.
The Senate is expected to proceed with key legislative and impeachment-related processes in the coming days, as leadership dynamics continue to evolve within the upper chamber.
