Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday alleged that the Senate minority bloc is attempting to persuade members of the majority to join efforts that could lead to another leadership change, claiming some lawmakers have received both invitations to talks and threats.
“On our side wala, on the majority side wala. Hindi ko alam sa minority. I’d like to consult them but I’ll only see them on monday. Medyo busy sila ngayon na tina-try kausapin yung mga miyembro namin na sumali ulit sa kanila,” Cayetano told reporters.
Asked if there was an ongoing coup attempt against him, Cayetano said such moves were “expected,” adding that information about the alleged efforts came from within the majority.
“May invitations sila to talk. May pananakot,” he said, without elaborating.
Despite the claims, Cayetano expressed confidence in the majority bloc, which he said remains intact for now.
“You’re always solid until you’re not. But I believe in the 13, I believe in our cause,” he said.
The Senate president also addressed speculation that a surprise move could emerge from the majority once the chamber convenes as an impeachment court, including the possible dismissal of the articles of impeachment.
“You always talk in the realm of probabilities and possibilities,” he said. “I can only discuss with you my call. I cannot talk for everyone.”
Cayetano said discussions within the majority bloc have so far been consistent in supporting the conduct of a trial.
“I will act in accordance with the rules. There always has to be legal grounds, and I will decide based on truth and evidence.”
He reiterated that among the 13-member majority bloc, no senator has expressed opposition to holding the impeachment trial.
