The National Bureau of Investigation–Organized and Transnational Crime Division (NBI-OTCD) arrested a South Korean fugitive in Pasay City, on Thursday May 22.

Acting on an official request from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the NBI-OTCD launched an enforcement operation in coordination with the Bureau of Immigration’s Fugitive Search Unit (BI-FSU), the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA), and the Philippine Air Force Military Intelligence.

"The arrest was based on an official communication from the Senior Consul of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the Bureau of Immigration," NBI wrote in a statement.

Santiago said the request identified the foreigner as an “undesirable alien” and a threat to public security due to his fugitive status, as he was wanted in South Korea for serious physical injury and kidnapping.

According to South Korean authorities, the suspect, along with other gang members, detained a victim over unpaid gambling debts and severely assaulted the individual using a baseball bat, causing multiple injuries, which prompted the Daegu District Court to issue a warrant of arrest.

"The Subject, along with fellow gang members, detained and severely assaulted the victim with a baseball bat, resulting in multiple injuries. This attack was related to the victim’s gambling debts," said NBI.

An Interpol Red Notice was subsequently issued for his capture.

Meanhwile, BI records show that the subject entered the Philippines on May 1, 2017, as a tourist and overstayed his visa after his last extension expired on January 28, 2020.
