More lawmakers in the House of Representatives are calling for an investigation into the recent rotational brownouts triggered by recurring yellow and red alerts across the country.

The Murang Kuryente Party-list joined mounting appeals for a congressional inquiry after power interruptions also affected operations inside the House last week.

According to Representative Arthur Yap, deliberations during a House session were disrupted by sudden outages, causing delays in legislative work and highlighting what he described as the country’s unreliable power service.

Yap stressed that if even the House of Representatives is not exempt from rotational brownouts, ordinary consumers, businesses, and essential services are even more vulnerable to power disruptions.

The lawmaker also criticized the Electric Power Industry Reform Act, or EPIRA, saying that 25 years after its passage, many of its promises have remained unfulfilled.

He pointed out that the Philippines continues to have among the highest electricity rates in Asia despite thin power reserves that frequently result in yellow and red alerts, forced outages, and rotational brownouts.

Yap further raised concerns over rising electricity costs, saying additional system expenses such as generation and transmission charges, ancillary services, and system loss are immediately passed on to consumers.
