Six people were killed and three others remained missing after a landslide struck a coastal town in Sarangani province in Mindanao early Friday, local officials said.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) reported that the landslide occurred at around 3 a.m. in Sitio Pandao, Barangay Poblacion in Malapatan.
Initial information from the municipal information office said a house occupied by two families was buried by soil and debris.
Search and rescue operations were ongoing as of posting time to locate the missing individuals.
Authorities said parts of Mindanao have been experiencing heavy rains due to the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” intensified by Typhoon Inday.
Flooding also forced the evacuation of more than 100 families in Malapatan early Friday, officials said.
In an online post, Sarangani Gov. Rogelio “Ruel” Pacquiao said provincial officials were coordinating with Malapatan Mayor Jun Sumbo Jr. to assess the extent of damage to villages, bridges, roads and mountainous areas affected by the landslide following a day of continuous rainfall.
Pacquiao said the provincial government, along with key officials and agencies, was working to ensure a sustained response to affected residents.
“Kasalukuyan po nating kinakausap si Malaapatan Mayor Jun Sumbo, Jr. upang mas maintindihan ang lawak ng pinsala na dulot sa mga nayon, pangunahing tulay at kalsada, at mga bundok na apektado ng landslide dahil sa buong araw na pag-ulan na dinala ng Habagat kahapon,” the governor said.
He urged the public to remain alert and vigilant amid continuing rains.
