American hitmaker and singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka passed away at the age of 86.
The news was confirmed through an official statement posted on Sedaka’s social media accounts by his family.
“Our family is devastated by the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Neil Sedaka,“ confirmed his family.
“A true rock and roll legend, an inspiration to millions, but most importantly, at least to those of us who were lucky enough to know him, an incredible human being who will be deeply missed,” it added.
No cause of death was given.
Sedaka was set to celebrate his 87th birthday on March 13.
Among his most beloved songs were Calendar Girl, Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen, Oh! Carol, and his signature hit, Breaking Up Is Hard to Do, which reached No. 1 in 1962.
Sedaka was also widely respected as a prolific composer. He wrote the 1958 hit Stupid Cupid, famously performed by Connie Francis.
Sedaka began his entertainment career in 1957 and remained active in music until his passing. He rose to fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s with a string of chart-topping hits that defined the era.
In 1975, Sedaka released a slowed-down version of “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,” which became a Top 10 hit in 1976 and earned him a Grammy nomination — a rare feat for a reimagined version of the same song.
Other popular tracks that cemented his legacy include The Diary, Run Samson Run, Laughter in the Rain, and My World Keeps Getting Smaller Everyday.
