The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has reminded all shipping companies to follow proper procedures before implementing any increase in passenger fares or cargo rates, as reported by RH Boy Gonzales.
According to MARINA Spokesperson Lusito Delos Santos of Marina, shipping firms are obligated to submit a prior notice to the agency and to the public before carrying out any price adjustments.
Delos Santos explained that although maritime transport in the country is regulated, companies are still required to give a 14-day advance notice before implementing fare or cargo fee increases.
Marina emphasized that it closely monitors any changes in rates to ensure fair competition within the industry and to protect passengers from potential abuses.
Currently, the agency is reviewing proposals from several shipping companies seeking a 17 to 20 percent increase in fares due to the ongoing rise in petroleum prices.
However, Marina warned that companies implementing charges beyond the allowed limits could face penalties under existing regulations.
