The legal counsel of Redeemer Homeless Mission, a nonprofit shelter currently caring for Maureen Delos Santos, clarified several points in the viral story about her walkout during her graduation ceremony to protest the alleged sexual abuse against her reported sister and appeal to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for protection.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the shelter said the faculty of Caloco Elementary School had not known of Delos Santos’ plan to walk out, or that parts of her speech alluded to the injustices committed.

“School Head Harrison Belleca and Ma’am Michelle Daliva-Ocampo were likewise unaware of the portions of her speech where she intended to call out the injustices and where she sought permission to walk out,” it said, adding that these faculty members have always shown support for Delos Santos.

In addition, Delos Santos was accompanied by her “Ate” Camille on her prayer walk to the local government office in Poblacion, Timambac, contrary to some reports that she had gone on her own.

The suspect allegedly involved in the rape case was already behind bars prior to Delos Santos’ demonstration, awaiting the court's final ruling. The prayer walk, the shelter added, was not done solely to protest against the incidents of sexual assault, but to stand up to a public official who has been “attempting to intimidate and silence the residents of Caloco.”

The shelter denied claims that it had failed to pay a ₱31,000 electricity bill, which was cited as justification for the wire-cutting incident.

“The shelter does not have an installed electric meter, despite repeated written requests and meetings with the Office of the General Manager of CASURECO II. At present, the facility relies solely on solar power,” the shelter said.

Moreover, the shelter said it will address the barangay councilor’s recent “self-serving and biased assertions” during an interview through the appropriate legal channels.
