Several families displaced by a massive fire in Riverside Extension, Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City will spend New Year at an evacuation center after their homes were destroyed just days before year-end.
The fire broke out on Sunday night, December 28, in a residential area along Commonwealth Avenue.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection–National Capital Region (BFP-NCR), the blaze started shortly after 8:00 p.m. and escalated to the fifth alarm level before it was declared under control at around 11:00 p.m.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were recorded during the incident, according to RH Val Gonzales' report in Damdaming Bayan.
However, a total of 79 families were affected and are currently staying at a covered court being used as a temporary evacuation center. Aside from losing their homes, the victims’ sources of livelihood were also damaged by the fire.
Meanwhile, the Quezon City local government, through its Social Services Development Department (SSDD), has already provided necessities to the victims and prepared breakfast meals for the affected families now staying in the evacuation area.
