Senators on Wednesday underscored the need to support young Filipino athletes as they issued statements following the adoption of a resolution honoring the late Palarong Pambansa Most Valuable Player Rene “Bobet” Baterbonia, who died in a drowning incident.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros described Baterbonia as a young athlete who rose from Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, to the national stage, carrying with him not only personal ambition but the hopes of his family and community.
“Just a kid with a big dream,” Hontiveros said, recalling how Baterbonia once described himself. She said his journey symbolized the aspirations of many Filipino youth striving to overcome poverty through sports.
Hontiveros extended her condolences to Baterbonia’s mother, Rovelyn, saying the Senate recognized his name “with respect” and that his story would serve as a reminder of the government’s duty to support aspiring athletes.
Sen. Bong Go said Baterbonia’s death marked the loss of a future filled with promise, emphasizing that “a lost life is a lost life forever.” He said the young athlete’s talent, kindness and love for family would continue to inspire Filipino youth.
“Mananatiling inspirasyon si Bobet Baterbonia sa mga kabataang Pilipino dahil sa kaniyang talento, kabutihan, mabait na bata, at pagmamahal sa pamilya.”
Sen. Robin Padilla stated the tragedy should prompt stronger efforts to guide and assist young people in reaching their dreams, stressing the importance of sustained support systems for youth development.
“Nawa’y maging paalala ito sa ating lahat na ang mga kabataang tulad ni bobet ay nararapat suportahan, alalayan at bigyan ng pagkakataong maabot ang kanilang mga pangarap.”
Sen. Camille Villar also called for prayers for the bereaved family and expressed hope that Baterbonia’s story would motivate other young Filipinos to keep striving for a better future.
The Senate resolution formally recognized Baterbonia’s achievements in Philippine sports and honored his legacy as a symbol of perseverance and hope among the country’s youth.
