Senator Joel Villanueva on Sunday emphasized that the Senate must prioritize public service over political division, saying he will attend any possible special session and fulfill his constitutional duty if Congress is called back into session.

Villanueva said one of the key priorities he intends to push is ensuring sufficient funding for relief, rehabilitation, and recovery efforts in areas of Mindanao affected by the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake recently. He added that lawmakers should immediately determine the level of assistance needed by affected communities and families.

In a video statement, Villanueva stressed that the Senate should remain focused on its mandate, especially during times of crisis.

“Hindi po pwedeng puro away na lang. Bilang mga lingkod-bayan, prayoridad po natin dapat ang siguruhin na patuloy na nagtatrabaho ang bawat isa sa atin, lalo na ang Senado para po sa ating mga kababayan,” Villanueva said.

He also confirmed that during any special session, he will support measures in advanced stages of legislation, including bills that are already on their third and final reading, as well as the confirmation of pending appointments of government officials, including officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“Sa pagkakataon po na magkaroon ng special session, tutuparin po natin ang ating sagradong tungkulin sa ilalim ng ating Saligang Batas. We will be there,” he added.

Villanueva further said he will file a resolution to ensure adequate funding for disaster response, emphasizing the urgency of coordinated government action.

“Hindi po ito panahon ng kampihan. Kapag may kababayan tayong nangangailangan, tungkulin nating tumugon at maglingkod,” he said.
