Presiding officer Francis 'Chiz' Escudero on Tuesday congratulated Filipino tennis star Alex Eala for her championship run at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open, moments before the Senate convened for the 12th day of Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial.
Addressing senator-judges and parties to the case, Escudero said that despite differing views and adversarial roles in the impeachment court, there are achievements that unite them as a nation.
“Nais po namin ipabatid ang aming nagkakaisang pagbati kay Binibining Alex Ayala sa kanyang panalo at kampiyonato sa DC Open, tunay na ikinararangal at ipinagbubunyi ka naming lahat,” Escudero said, drawing light laughter as he joked that some senator-judges may be sleepy after watching the match the night before.
Eala’s victory marked a historic milestone for Philippine tennis, earning praise from officials across government.
Separately, Senator-judge Joel Villanueva filed a resolution seeking to formally honor Eala for her achievement.
The measure aims to recognize her contributions to the sport and the pride she brought to the country through her success in international competition.
The Senate then proceeded with the day’s impeachment trial proceedings.
