The Senate has approved on third and final reading a measure declaring the Waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana) as the national orchid of the Philippines.

Voting 13-0-0, senators passed Senate Bill No. 2092, which seeks to formally recognize the Waling-waling as a national symbol of the country’s rich biodiversity.

Sen. Loren Legarda, principal author and sponsor of Senate Bill No. 2092, previously said the measure aims to strengthen public awareness on the protection of native plants and promote conservation of endangered species.

"The importance of this measure lies not merely in recognition, but in its protection," Legarda said during her sponsorship speech at the Senate plenary on May 5.

Under the proposed law, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will lead efforts in the conservation, protection, and propagation of the orchid.

Meanwhile, the National Museum of the Philippines will document and promote its scientific, cultural, and historical significance.

Known as the “Queen of Philippine Orchids,” the waling-waling is prized for its rarity, beauty, and cultural significance.

"To declare it a national symbol is to elevate its status and with that elevation comes responsibility," she said.

The Waling-waling, which is endemic to the Philippines, naturally grows in forested areas of Davao, Cotabato, and Zamboanga.
