The House of Representatives and the Senate are moving forward with the ratification of the proposed 2026 national budget, after the Senate amended its legislative calendar and set its return to session on Monday, December 29, before immediately suspending session.

Nueva Ecija Representative Mikaela Suansing said the budget ratification was originally scheduled for December 22, which was also intended to be the last session day before the Christmas break.

However, the Bicameral Conference Committee (BiCam) secretariat needed more time to complete the report covering the agreed provisions of the budget.

The BiCam deliberations were held from December 13 to 17, with the finalization of the joint report expected to take five days. Once completed, the enrolled General Appropriations Bill will also undergo review by the Department of Budget and Management.

Meanwhile, lawmakers expressed their condolences over the death of Antipolo 2nd District Representative Romeo Acop.

House Speaker Faustino "Bojie" Dy III described Acop’s passing as a significant loss to the House, while former House Speaker Martin Romualdez cited Acop’s crucial role in the success of the Quad Committee investigation.

Acop, a former police officer, was known for his rigorous questioning of resource persons and investigative skills.

He was also credited with uncovering questionable acknowledgment receipts that later led to the identification of individuals, including Mary Grace Piattos.

No schedule has yet been announced for Acop’s necrological services, as Congress remains focused on the ratification of the 2026 national budget upon its return to session on December 29.
