The Senate, acting as an impeachment court, has ordered Vice President Sara Duterte to appear, either in person or through her legal counsel, at her impeachment trial on Monday, July 6.
In a notice dated July 2 and addressed to Duterte, the impeachment court formally informed the Vice President that the proceedings would commence as scheduled.
The notice was signed by Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian, who will serve as the presiding officer of the impeachment court.
The order was issued pursuant to Rule VII of the Rules of Procedure on Impeachment Trials and in accordance with the Writ of Summons issued on May 19, 2026.
The notice directs Duterte to "appear before the Senate of the Philippines upon notice, and to abide by, obey and perform such orders, directions, and judgments as the Senate of the Philippines shall make in the premises according to the Constitution and laws of the Philippines."
It further states: "You are hereby notified that trial will commence on the 6th day of July at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, and are further directed to appear on said date, in person or through counsel, before the Impeachment Court."
The directive comes despite repeated statements from Duterte's defense team that the Vice President would attend the proceedings only "if necessary."
The impeachment court also informed the House of Representatives that it is prepared to proceed with the impeachment trial on Monday.
"Pursuant to Rule X of the Rules of Procedure on Impeachment Trials, the House of Representatives is hereby informed that the Senate is ready to proceed upon the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Zimmerman Duterte at the Session Hall of the Senate of the Philippines," it said.
The trial will begin at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 6, at the Senate Session Hall.
