The Senate impeachment court will not issue a subpoena for former Sen. Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV for now, Presiding Officer Chiz Escudero said Tuesday during the 31st day of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Escudero said the prosecution should first present its witness from the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC), as well as bank officials or relevant bank records, if available, before Trillanes takes the witness stand.

The prosecution may still call Trillanes voluntarily, while the court may revisit the subpoena issue later.

House prosecutor Rep. Terry Ridon earlier identified Trillanes as an additional prosecution witness and sought to present him on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Ridon said Trillanes would testify on matters related to the case beyond bank accounts.

Lead defense counsel Sheila Sison withdrew the defense’s objection to Trillanes’ presentation, saying they would accept the prosecution’s “sudden” proposal but would take note of the “belated” changes in the order of witnesses.

Escudero said Trillanes’ testimony had been linked to funds and bank accounts, prompting the court to suggest that the AMLC witness or relevant bank records be presented first.

Meanwhile, Atty. Kathy Baldonado and Atty. Marco Pineda are scheduled to testify Wednesday, while AMLC lawyer Atty. Ronel Buenaventura is expected to appear in the succeeding hearings on Oct. 1 and 2.

Trillanes earlier said he was willing to testify, saying, “I hope to be presented as a witness pagkatapos ni Mayor Baste.”
