The Philippine Senate formally recognized P-pop girl group BINI for making history as the first Filipino act to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, following the adoption of Senate Resolution No. 370 on Wednesday, May 6.
The eight-member group appeared before lawmakers during the plenary session as senators commended their landmark performances held on April 10 and 17 in California, USA, one of the world’s largest and most prestigious music festivals.
Senator Bam Aquino, who authored the resolution, hailed the group’s global breakthrough as a reflection of Filipino excellence.
“For the first time, a Filipino group performed at one of the largest and most famous music festivals in the world. We can say that this success is a reflection of Filipino talent and skill on the global stage,” he said in his sponsorship speech.
Aquino emphasized that BINI’s achievement comes at a time when the country faces various challenges, calling it “a victory to be celebrated.” He noted that the group showcased Filipino pride by incorporating traditional elements and their hit song Pantropiko into their costumes, music, and choreography.
“The cherry on top was when BINI introduced themselves in their native languages,” Aquino added, highlighting the group’s cultural representation on the international stage.
The Senate resolution underscored the importance of recognizing Filipino artists who bring pride to the nation through global achievements, while also aligning with the government’s push to strengthen the creative industries as drivers of growth and innovation.
BINI’s Coachella set featured a 10-song lineup including popular tracks such as Pantropiko, Salamin-Salamin, Karera, and Shagidi, blending contemporary pop with Filipino-inspired visuals like the salakot and tropical-themed attire.
Aquino further said the group’s success serves as inspiration for young Filipinos.
“Higit pa rito, ang kanilang tagumpay ay nagsisilbing inspirasyon sa napakaraming kabataang Pilipino na mangarap at maniwala na kaya rin nilang maabot ang world stage,” he said.
He concluded by stressing that BINI’s milestone is not only a win for the music industry but for the entire country, reflecting the growing potential of the Philippines’ creative economy on the global stage.
