The Senate of the Philippines on Friday joined the nation in commemorating Ninoy Aquino Day, honoring the late Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and the values he championed.

In a statement, the Senate urged the public to remember and reflect on Aquino’s courage, sacrifice and commitment to the country.

“The Senate of the Philippines joins the nation in remembering the late Sen. Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino Jr., whose courage and sacrifice became a turning point in our history,” the Senate said.

It said Aquino showed that true leadership meant putting the country ahead of oneself, even at great personal cost.

“As we commemorate Ninoy Aquino Day, let us reflect on the values he stood for,” the Senate said.

Ninoy Aquino Day is observed every Aug. 21 to commemorate Aquino’s death on Aug. 21, 1983, when he was assassinated at the Manila International Airport upon returning to the Philippines from exile.

His death became a pivotal moment in the country’s history and helped galvanize opposition to the administration of then-President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
