The Senate adopted on Wednesday a resolution put forth by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano lauding the Philippine men’s national volleyball team, Alas Pilipinas, for their 19th-place finish in the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship and celebrating the country’s solo hosting of the international tournament.
“Honoring Filipino athletes serves a public purpose because their achievements inspire national pride, set standards for sports programs, and justify sustained investment in facilities, training, and athlete support nationwide,” Cayetano said.
Sponsoring the Senate Resolution No. 143, Cayetano said the team brought the country “immense pride and honor” and proved that, given the opportunity, Filipino athletes can shine.
The senator also recognized standouts such as captain Bryan Bagunas, who placed third among the tournament’s top scorers, and Marck Espejo, who earned fourth place among receivers.
Cayetano also acknowledged the coaching staff led by Angiolino Frigoni and the reforms carried out by the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) President Ramon "Tats" Suzara, which paved the way for overseas tournaments and improved training programs.
The team and overall tournament’s success, he added, has allowed the Philippines to host the FIVB Women’s Volleyball Championship in 2029.
Italy bagged the world title a second consecutive time on September 28 after overpowering Bulgaria.
