The Senate on Monday, February 9, approved Proposed Resolution No. 256, expressing the chamber’s firm stance in condemning recent statements by the Chinese Embassy that criticized Philippine officials and institutions.

Senate Resolution No. 256 denounces what lawmakers described as interference in the country’s internal affairs, following a series of public remarks from the embassy targeting Philippine positions on the West Philippine Sea issue.

During plenary deliberations, senators placed on record the responses issued by the Chinese Embassy to statements made by Philippine government officials asserting the country’s sovereign rights. The discussion also touched on the controversy involving a caricature created by Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela depicting Chinese President Xi Jinping, which drew criticism from some quarters and a reaction from the Chinese side.

Lawmakers emphasized that diplomatic communications should observe restraint and mutual respect, stressing that Philippine officials have the right and duty to speak on matters involving national sovereignty and maritime rights without facing undue foreign criticism.

The resolution affirms the Senate’s position that defending the country’s interests in the West Philippine Sea is a legitimate exercise of sovereignty under international law and that external attempts to discredit or pressure Philippine institutions are unacceptable.

With the approval of the measure, the Senate also signaled support for appropriate diplomatic actions to uphold the dignity of the Philippines and ensure that relations with other states adhere to established international norms.
