Senator Pia Cayetano turned emotional during a Senate plenary session on Wednesday, May 20, after reacting to the privilege speech of Senator Risa Hontiveros, which condemned the recent gun-related incident inside the chamber.
Cayetano strongly disputed the narrative that “nothing happened,” sharing her personal experience of fear and confusion during the incident and describing how close she was to danger inside the Senate premises.
“Parang walang nangyari. Yan po ang statement ng ating butihing Senadora Risa Hontiveros… Pero para sa amin na nandito, napakaraming nangyari,” Cayetano said.
She recalled moments of panic, saying she had to inform her children amid the situation.
“Takot na takot po ako na kailangan ko na magpaalam sa mga anak ko,” she said, adding that she was protected by two doors during what she described as a gunfire incident.
Cayetano also highlighted the fear experienced by Senate staff and media personnel, noting that many were unable to leave due to their duties.
“Yung staff ko… nandoon siya sa labas… hindi niya alam kung saan siya pupunta,” she said.
The senator expressed disappointment over what she felt was a lack of concern from colleagues after the incident. “Wala akong ni isang narinig na 'Kamusta na kayo?’… Napakasakit nun sa akin,” she added.
She clarified that she was not blaming anyone but emphasized the need to acknowledge the experiences of those present. “You have your own story. I respect that. But please respect my own story,” Cayetano said.
The emotional exchange comes amid ongoing discussions in the Senate following the incident, which has drawn calls for accountability and a formal investigation.
