Senator Robin Padilla has proposed a lifestyle check on officials of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) amid growing concerns over alleged corruption related to the use of Letters of Authority (LOAs).
Padilla said such a move could help restore public confidence, similar to the lifestyle checks previously ordered by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for government officials.
“Kaligayahan po ng taumbayan 'yan. Kahit mapuno ang social media, kaligayahan nila ‘yan,” Padilla said during the hearing, emphasizing the importance of transparency,” Padilla emphasized.
In response, BIR Commissioner Charlito Mendoza said that some government agencies had already conducted lifestyle checks on BIR personnel. He noted that the bureau currently employs around 16,500 staff.
Padilla stressed that in a time when the country faces numerous challenges, ensuring transparency can reassure the public.
“Malaking bagay 'yan, kasi alam nyo ang ating bayan ay dumadaan sa napakatinding pagsubok. Kapag tayo ay naging transparent sa tao, makakalma sila,” he added.
