Senator Loren Legarda has filed Senate Bill 1265 seeking to declare January 22 as National Farmers’ Day to honor the vital role of Filipino farmers in ensuring the country’s food security.
Legarda said farmers play a crucial role in feeding the nation and sustaining the economy, yet many of them remain among the poorest sectors of society despite their contributions.
She also stressed that farmers continue to face serious challenges, including the effects of climate change and natural disasters, while remaining on the frontlines of food production.
The senator added that declaring a National Farmers’ Day would institutionalize recognition of farmers’ sacrifices and encourage government agencies, local governments, and private institutions to strengthen programs that support farmers and fisherfolk.
