Senator Imee Marcos called for the deferral of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) due to the oil crisis, citing possible hindrances in their participation and due to more pressing needs.
Under Senate Bill No. 2067, Senator Marcos proposed to move the November elections to October next year. The move ensures that more Filipinos will be able to cast their votes, as rising fares and oil prices may keep them from heading to polling stations.
The senator also pointed out that the elections will come right after “Undas,” when Filipinos honor their deceased loved ones, affecting fare rates.
While the BSKE is important, the present crisis must be taken into consideration, she noted. The ₱16-billion fund allocated for it may instead be used to address the immediate needs of Filipinos, such as food, crude oil, and services.
Additionally, the extension of barangay officials’ service will ensure continuity in their community programs and initiatives amid the crisis, Senator Marcos said.
She also added that if the election were postponed, voters would have more time to update their voters' information and possibly change the location from which they will be voting, thereby doing away with the need to travel to their hometowns.
The BSKE has previously been moved from December 2025 to give way to the extended term of office for barangay and SK officials.
