Senator Erwin Tulfo on Tuesday called on Iranian authorities to refrain from actions that could endanger merchant vessels and civilian lives, emphasizing the need to protect Filipino seafarers operating in high-risk maritime zones.

Tulfo made the appeal during a privilege speech on May 5, 2026, following reported attacks on separate vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, where Filipino crew members were onboard.

While no injuries were reported, the senator said the incidents underscore the persistent dangers faced by maritime workers in conflict-affected areas.

He acknowledged previous efforts by Iranian authorities to allow safe passage for ships carrying Filipino crews, noting that such actions demonstrate recognition of the need to safeguard lives regardless of nationality.

“We urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, protect civilians and merchant vessels, uphold international law, and work toward the de-escalation of the conflict in the region,” Tulfo said.

The senator stressed that ensuring the safety of overseas Filipino workers, particularly seafarers, remains a top priority amid escalating geopolitical tensions affecting global shipping routes.
