Senator Erwin Tulfo was officially elected as the new chairperson of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on Monday, February 2, replacing Senator Imee Marcos, who held the position for nearly four years.
Senate President Vicente "Tito" Sotto III explained that the chairmanship of the Foreign Relations Committee is traditionally reserved for members of the majority bloc, citing the committee’s strategic importance in shaping the country’s foreign policy and international engagements. Tulfo’s appointment aligns with this practice.
As the new chair, Tulfo will oversee the Senate’s review of international agreements, diplomatic initiatives, and foreign policy legislation. He inherits ongoing committee matters, including pending treaties, bilateral discussions, and multilateral engagements with global partners.
Sen. Marcos, meanwhile, has stepped down from the post but continues her legislative work in the Senate, focusing on her other committee responsibilities. Observers note that the leadership change reflects internal realignments within the majority bloc and may influence the Senate’s approach to foreign affairs under the current administration.
Tulfo’s appointment comes at a time when the Philippines is actively engaging in regional diplomacy, including discussions on economic partnerships, security cooperation, and international trade agreements.
