Transport group Piston and other sectors staged a protest in Mendiola, Manila, on Friday afternoon as part of the second day of a nationwide transport strike over rising fuel prices.
In a report by RH Boy Gonzales on Public Service Hour, rallyists began their march from Welcome Rotonda in Quezon City, arriving in Mendiola past 1:30 p.m.
Before the program commenced, representatives from the Manila Police District (MPD) met with Piston National President Mody Floranda to ensure the activity would proceed smoothly.
The police allowed the group to hold the program for two hours but reminded participants to comply with the law to avoid arrests.
In his speech, Floranda expressed the grievances of drivers over the continuing increase in petroleum prices, which he said has burdened the transportation sector.
He again called on the government to repeal the oil deregulation law and implement price control measures for fuel.
Piston described the two-day nationwide protest as successful and vowed to continue its actions.
Roads along Recto and Legarda were closed on Friday in connection with the transport strike, a move by protesters to urge government action amid the growing impact of rising fuel prices.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) described the ongoing strike as “generally orderly,” despite minor disruptions reported in some areas.
