The Sandiganbayan has formally declared former Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co as a “fugitive from justice” after he failed to appear before the court despite standing warrants related to his graft cases.
In its order, the anti-graft court stated: “The accused is hereby declared a fugitive from justice for his continued failure to submit to the jurisdiction of the Court.” The ruling came as part of the court’s effort to expedite proceedings involving Co’s pending charges.
Alongside the declaration, the Sandiganbayan also directed the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to immediately cancel Co’s passport. The order read: “The DFA is hereby ordered to effect the prompt cancellation of the passport issued to accused Zaldy S. Co.”
Officials said the move aims to prevent Co from evading law enforcement or leaving the country amid ongoing efforts to locate him. Sources familiar with the case noted that law enforcement agencies have been coordinating to track his whereabouts and enforce existing arrest warrants.
The Sandiganbayan emphasized that steps will continue to be taken to ensure Co is brought before the court to face the charges against him.
On Wednesday, the DFA confirmed the cancellation of Co's passport, through a statement issued by DFA Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro.
