San Miguel Beermen cemented its place atop the league once more after overpowering TNT Tropang 5G, 92-77, to clinch the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup crown on Sunday, February 1, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Beermen wrapped up the best-of-seven Finals in six games, leaning on a dominant all-around performance from June Mar Fajardo, who was named Finals Most Valuable Player—the first-ever recipient of the Ramon Fernandez Trophy.
Fajardo delivered a monster outing in the clincher with 29 points and 23 rebounds, converting 7 of his 8 free throws to anchor San Miguel’s title run.
San Miguel set the tone early, racing to a commanding 26-10 lead in the opening quarter and taking a 49-39 advantage into halftime.
TNT mounted a strong third-quarter push, trimming the gap to just two points, 70-68, heading into the final period, but the Beermen steadied themselves when it mattered most.
The Beermen then outscored TNT 22-9 in the fourth quarter to pull away and seal the championship.
CJ Perez provided crucial support with 19 points and seven assists, earning PBA–Eagle Cement Assist Man of the Game honors.
Rodney Brondial added 15 points, while Marcio Lassiter chipped in 13. Alex Cabagnot Ross contributed nine points as San Miguel’s experience showed down the stretch.
For TNT, Calvin Oftana led the scoring with 28 points, while RR Heading had 14 and Poy Erram finished with 11, but the Tropang 5G struggled to sustain their momentum late against San Miguel’s disciplined defense and execution.
After the game, San Miguel head coach Leo Austria praised his team’s poise in a championship setting.
“Tonight’s game is really amazing for the players because from the start to finish, talagang pinakita nila what’s the character of the team,” Austria said.
“Although we have a good start and then nakarecover, the composure ng player talagang nandoon. Hindi nawawala because of their experience, especially in this time of situation, championship game.”
