The leptospirosis ward of San Lazaro Hospital in Manila is nearing full capacity as the number of patients continues to rise following flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

As of 7 a.m. Monday, the hospital had 120 patients confined in its leptospirosis ward, which has a capacity of 150 beds, as reported by RH Tina Nolasco

The hospital recorded 35 new leptospirosis patients who sought medical attention over the past 24 hours.

Six patients have died from the disease since Aug. 10, according to hospital data.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection commonly associated with exposure to water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals. Health authorities have repeatedly warned residents to avoid wading in floodwaters, particularly when they have open wounds.

San Lazaro Hospital has recorded a total of 204 leptospirosis admissions since January.

The rising number of cases comes as Metro Manila and nearby areas continue to deal with the effects of flooding, which can increase exposure to contaminated water.
