San Beda delivered a commanding performance in Game 1 of the NCAA Season 101 Men’s Basketball Finals, defeating the Letran Knights, 89–70, on Wednesday, December 10, at the Big Dome.
Both teams opened with high intensity, trading baskets in a tightly contested first half. The Red Lions held a slim 46–43 lead at halftime as neither side allowed the other to pull away.
In the second half, San Beda’s trademark defense took center stage. The Red Lions tightened their coverage, disrupted Letran's offensive rhythm, and capitalized on key opportunities to extend their lead.
Head coach Yuri Escueta credited their defensive identity for taking control of the game.
“Playing defense, that has been our identity the whole season. Hopefully, it will work for us in the second game,” Escueta said, emphasizing the team’s collective effort.
A significant moment in the matchup came when San Beda’s star rookie Janti Miller was ejected after receiving a technical foul late in the game. Despite the setback, the Red Lions maintained their composure and continued to dictate the pace until the final buzzer.
Meanwhile, Letran Knights’ rookie guard Titing Manalili admitted that their strategy did not unfold as planned.
“Medyo hindi nag-work yung game plan namin yung Game 1. Babaguhin namin. Sabi naman kanina ni Coach (Allen Ricardo), alam niya na yung gagawin niya, yung adjustment niya sa game 2,” Manalili said, expressing confidence that the Knights will regroup.
With the victory, San Beda moves one win away from reclaiming the NCAA crown, securing a 1–0 lead in the best-of-three series. Letran now faces a must-win scenario to force a deciding Game 3.
Game 2 of the NCAA Men’s Basketball finals is set on Saturday, December 13, 2 PM at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
