Russell Westbrook announced his retirement from the NBA after 18 seasons, ending a decorated career highlighted by an MVP award, nine All-Star selections and an NBA-record 209 triple-doubles.

Westbrook made the announcement on social media, sharing a career-retrospective video narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan.

The 37-year-old guard finishes his career as the NBA's all-time leader in triple-doubles and holds the single-season record with 42, a mark he set during the 2016-17 season.

Westbrook won the NBA Most Valuable Player award that season after averaging a triple-double, becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson to accomplish the feat over an entire regular season.

He was selected to nine All-Star teams and nine All-NBA teams, won the All-Star Game MVP award twice and led the league in scoring twice and assists twice.

A relentless rebounder despite playing guard, Westbrook spent his first 11 seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder before playing for six other teams. He finished his NBA career with the Sacramento Kings during the 2025-26 season.

Westbrook also won an Olympic gold medal with the United States at the 2012 London Games and was named among the NBA's 75 greatest players of all time.

He retires with 209 career triple-doubles, 42 in a single season and a legacy that extended beyond his statistical accomplishments.

“My legacy is what I do off the floor, how many people I’m able to impact and inspire along my journey,” Westbrook once said.

Westbrook leaves the NBA as one of the most accomplished and distinctive guards of his generation, with his triple-double record standing as one of the defining marks of his career.
